Yerba Mate (pro: yerbah mahtay) is the national beverage of Argentina and is consumed daily, and often throughout the day, in South and Central American countries. It contains mattein, similar (some say identical molecule) to caffeine…but the results are much different in that yerba mate gives a stimulating, energizing effect without the sharp ‘downjolt’ of coffee or espresso. Our organic unblended yerba mate has a fresh, grassy taste, while our blends offer the addition of flavors that amortize the grassiness. In some countries where yerba mate is the beverage of choice, portable kits are worn around the neck with a small thermos of hot water on one side and a cup filled with the leaves on the other, and infusions are done frequently over the leaves to maintain a feeling of energy and well-being all day long. It is also offered traditionally in a group or communal form, passing a bombilla (gourd) filled with the beverage around the circle with everyone sipping from a gold-tipped straw.
Brewing: 190-195F for 3-4 minutes (time depends on strength desired)
